The amount of water in a typical Natural Aquarium is approximately equivalent to a puddle in nature. Since the number of fish and plants in the aquarium relatively much exceeds their number in nature, the water must be purified artificially. The filter does exactly this. Although it is artificial, the filtration system in the Natural Aquarium is based on a mechanism occurring in the natural environment, where microorganisms work effectively. The filtration that takes place in the filter is divided into the following three types. The first is mechanical filtration, which captures larger impurities thanks to a fine filter element. The second is chemical (adsorption) filtration, during which substances settle on a filter medium that has fine pores and therefore offers a very large filtration surface. The third is biological filtration, which breaks down organic matter in water using various microorganisms inhabiting the filter cartridges. Whether the arrangement can be beautiful or not depends on the quality of biological filtration.
