The condition of aquarium plants deteriorates due to the quality of the lighting provided to them. Both plants – Green Rotala and Glossostigma – tend to spread on the ground when there is enough light.
It is recommended to replace meta-halogen lamps every 1.5 years, with an average of 8-9 hours of operation per day. The total number of operating hours of your meta-halogen lamps clearly suggests the need to replace them with new ones. We also believe that 3.5 hours of lamp operation per day is definitely too short. Even when they are turned off, other light sources, such as home lighting or outdoor sunlight, continue to operate. They also affect plant growth and may be the reason why weakened plants grow as you described. Therefore, we usually recommend providing the aquarium with an 8-9 hour dose of good quality light, which will stimulate the vegetation to grow properly.
If there is an algae problem, at least 6 hours of lighting per day should still be provided.
